Privacy Policy
The short version
- Your hearing results, training scores, journal entries, voice memos, and noise exposure history are stored on your device. We don't run a server for your health data, and there is no cloud sync.
- We use two third-party services for crash reports and product analytics (Sentry and Amplitude). Neither receives your hearing results, journal contents, or audio recordings. Details below, with opt-out instructions.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or use your data to train models.
- Apple handles your subscription purchases. We never see your payment information.
Who we are
Auris is developed by Keith Woodruff, based in Houston, Texas. Contact: support@aurisapp.com.
What Auris stores on your device
Everything you create in Auris is stored locally on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch using Apple's SwiftData framework, plus your Documents directory for audio files. This includes:
- Your Hearing IQ score and history
- Digits-in-Noise screening results
- Training session scores (frequency discrimination, gap detection, speech-in-noise, audio recovery)
- Journal entries, situation tags, and any voice memos you record inside a journal entry
- Noise exposure snapshots
- Streaks, milestones, and preferences
This data stays on your device. If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it.
HealthKit
If you grant permission, Auris reads the following data categories through Apple's HealthKit:
- Audiogram data (hearing test results stored by iOS)
- Environmental audio exposure
- Headphone audio exposure
- Headphone audio exposure events
Auris does not write any data to HealthKit. All HealthKit data stays under your control in Apple Health. Auris does not transmit your HealthKit data to any server, third party, or advertising network. You can revoke Auris's HealthKit access at any time in Settings › Health › Data Access & Devices › Auris.
Permissions Auris may request
- HealthKit (read). To read your audiogram and noise-exposure data. Optional.
- Notifications. To remind you about daily sessions. Scheduled locally on your device. Optional.
- Microphone. To record optional voice memos inside Journal entries. Recordings are saved as local audio files on your device and are never transmitted off your device by Auris. Optional.
- Location (when in use). Only when you open "Find Care" to show audiologists near you. Used to query a map and is not stored by Auris.
You can deny or revoke any of these in Settings and continue using the rest of the app.
What Auris sends off your device
We try to keep this list as short as possible.
1. Subscription purchases (Apple)
When you buy Auris Pro, Apple processes the transaction. We receive a receipt from Apple confirming your subscription status. We never see your card number, Apple ID email, or billing address.
2. Crash and non-fatal error reports (Sentry)
Auris uses Sentry to collect crash reports and non-fatal error reports so we can fix bugs. When an error occurs, the following is sent to Sentry:
- A short error message identifying which feature and operation failed (e.g.
journal.voice_memo_start_recording failed) - A stack trace
- Device model, OS version, app version, build number, and release environment (production / beta)
- Error-specific context values that the failing code chose to attach (for example, "audio_mode" or "recorder_initialized")
- MetricKit crash and performance payloads from iOS
Sentry does NOT receive: your Hearing IQ, audiogram values, specific screening or training scores, journal entry text, voice memo audio, HealthKit data, email, name, or any advertising identifier.
3. Product analytics (Amplitude)
Auris uses Amplitude to understand which features people actually use, so we know what to improve. We send event names like "screening_started" or "training_completed" along with:
- An anonymous, random device identifier generated by the app on first launch. This is not tied to your Apple ID, email, name, or phone number.
- The event name, an event ID, a session ID, and a timestamp
- Your current subscription tier (free or pro)
- A flag indicating whether you've granted HealthKit access (but not the values behind it)
- App version, OS version, device model, platform, and locale
- A handful of non-identifying event properties (for example, which exercise you completed, or how long a session lasted)
Amplitude does NOT receive: your audiogram values, hearing test scores, journal text, voice memos, HealthKit values, email, name, location, or any advertising identifier.
You can turn analytics off entirely in Settings › Privacy › Share Analytics inside the app. When off, no events are sent to Amplitude.
4. Map tiles (Apple MapKit)
The Find Care map is rendered by Apple's MapKit. Apple's privacy practices govern map-tile requests.
That is the complete list. We do not use Google Analytics, Firebase, Facebook SDK, Mixpanel, AppsFlyer, Segment, PostHog, or any advertising SDK.
What we do NOT collect
- We do not have user accounts. There is no email, password, or username to register.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not sell, rent, or trade data to anyone, for any purpose.
- We do not use your data to train machine learning models.
- We do not share HealthKit data with any third party, including Sentry and Amplitude.
Sharing features (you are in control)
- Export a PDF summary for an audiologist. Generated on your device. How you share it (AirDrop, email, print) is up to you. Auris does not upload the PDF.
- Milestone share cards. Social-media-style images you can post if you want. Nothing is shared without your explicit tap.
Children
Auris is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has used Auris and data should be removed, contact us at support@aurisapp.com.
Your rights
Because your data lives on your device:
- Access: open the app — your data is there.
- Export: use the built-in PDF export for a portable copy of your training and screening history.
- Delete: uninstall Auris, or clear individual entries inside the app. You can also disable analytics at any time in Settings; existing analytics events we have already received cannot be individually deleted because they are not tied to your identity, but you can request deletion of all events associated with your anonymous device ID by contacting support@aurisapp.com.
For HealthKit data, use the Apple Health app directly.
Legal bases (for EU / UK users)
Where GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on:
- Consent — HealthKit, notifications, microphone, location, and analytics each require your explicit permission (either via iOS system prompts or our in-app privacy toggle).
- Contract — processing your Auris Pro subscription via Apple.
- Legitimate interest — Sentry crash reporting to keep the app working.
You have the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data. Because most data is on your device, these rights are exercised by using the app's built-in features. For analytics deletion or any other request, contact support@aurisapp.com.
Security
Your on-device data is protected by iOS sandboxing and your device-level protections (passcode, Face ID, Touch ID). Data sent to Sentry and Amplitude travels over TLS (HTTPS). We do not run our own servers that store your Auris data, so there is no cloud breach surface for your hearing results.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the Effective date at the top and note what changed below. Material changes will be announced in the app's release notes.
